VITA/IRS Internship: Certified Volunteer Tax Preparer

Interns will prepare Federal and State tax returns using IRS compatible computer software. Following self-paced online training you will receive certification to complete Basic or Advanced level tax returns.

Start and end dates: January 20, 2018 through April 15, 2018. Training (on-line) December/January

Location:  Northwest Community Center – 154 Lawn Street, Buffalo
(Lawn Street is off Military between Kenmore and Hertel Ave.)

Day(s) of the week the intern needs to be on site:  Wednesdays 4:00PM – 8:00PM and/or Saturdays 8:30AM – 1:30PM

How many hours: Hours can be adjusted to accommodate the intern’s activities and studies

Session(s) for internship? Late autumn (Prep) through tax season which ends in mid April (Winter-Spring)

Any age requirement? None

Any course prerequisites: None

Specific skills, if any, required:  Interns do not need to have previous tax experience you will be trained under a mentor.

Specific duties:  You can choose a volunteer role that doesn’t require tax law certification. The hours are flexible, the training is free and the time commitment is up to you. Basic training can be completed in approximately 8 hours. Orientation is provided and shadowing with an experienced volunteer is provided until you are comfortable. You will be seated next to your assigned mentor throughout the filing season as your on-site resource. Typically, there are 8-12 volunteers for each session. Also interns will be working with low income, needy, individuals.

Any forms an intern needs to complete prior to working within organization?: Upon completion of the on-line course you will receive a certificate of completion
