Internship at Jacob’s Institute with Dr. Kenneth Synder

The purpose of the internship is to expose the interns to the different research and career opportunities on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and allow them to explore a topic of particular interest to them. During the program, the interns will:
1. Hear lectures two to three times a week from Dr. Kenneth Snyder (neurosurgeon)
2. Watch relevant TED talks
3. Participate in lunch n’ learn presentations with key professionals on the Buffalo Niagara Medical
Campus (past speakers have included Jody Lomeo, President and CEO of Kaleida Health, Bill Maggio,
CEO of the Jacobs Institute and Chair of 43North, and Norma Nowak, Founder of Empire Genomics)
4. Go on tours of institutions on the BNMC campus (Buffalo Manufacturing Works, Roswell Park Cancer
Institute, etc.)
5. Be responsible for selecting a research topic and preparing a five-minute mini-TED type talk on that
topic for presentation at the end of the program to fellow interns, Dr. Snyder, JI staff and college interns.

Start and end dates: Starts July 5th and end July 31st, 2018

Location: The Jacobs Institute, 875 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, NY 14203

Day(s) of the week the intern needs to be on site: Monday through Friday when there are lectures with Dr. Snyder, the lunch n’ learn presentations, and scheduled tours – interns will otherwise be free to conduct their research and prepare their mini-Ted talks at the JI or elsewhere)

How many hours: 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM except on Lunch n’ Learn days when the day will go until 1PM

Any age requirement? Rising Juniors and Seniors – if the interns are 17, they can shadow in the neuro catheterization labs

Any course prerequisites: AP Chemistry or AP Biology

Specific skills, if any, required: An inquiring mind and ability to conduct research independently

Specific duties:  Each intern will select a research topic, conduct research on the topic, and prepare a five-minute mini-TED talk for public presentation at the end of the program. Interns will also be shown how to use the Mentice endovascular simulator and may be asked to demonstrate it to tour groups.
